Software developers face increasing complexity

August 13, 2006

On Friday, Rogue Wave Software (RWS) announced the findings of a recent study of the Web services software development community focused on application development, data management and service-oriented architecture (SOA).

RWS' report reveals that Web services developers expect an increase in data sharing and utilize a larger number of data formats within their organizations, with a majority using at least six and 25 percent using more than 20 different data formats.

Additionally, the use of XML documents of greater than 1 MB is proving to be a primary challenge to throughput speed and memory efficiency.

“The survey data points to the need for increased application scalability within an organization,” said Cory Isaacson, president, Rogue Wave Software. “However, the results also seem to show that many organizations do not appear to have plans in place for managing the increased data services load and resulting performance issues that might occur.”

Overall, 42 percent of respondents have requirements to specifically increase the scalability of their applications. Of those, 15 percent need to increase scalability by more than 10 times.

An additional 23 percent need to increase by between 5-10X.

More than 80% of respondents need to parse XML documents.

Of those, 18 percent currently parse XML documents greater than 5MB and an additional 18 percent are parsing documents between 1-5MB.

35 percent see greater throughput speed and 26 percent see memory efficiency as the greatest challenge to XML parsing.

58 percent reported over 6 data formats within their organization, with 25 percent of respondents using greater than 20 different formats.

“As IT architects are faced with continuously greater demands for large XML document parsing and for sharing data in multiple formats, it is increasingly important for developers to be able to use and re-use data, regardless of language," added Cory Isaacson, president, Rogue Wave Software division, Quovadx.

“Service-oriented architectures and standardized service data object (SDO) specifications can allow developers to effectively handle the volume and size of today's XML messages, avoiding bottlenecks that can occur with a centralized data hub.

Further, SDOs can help developers to bridge between Java and legacy technologies common in populating corporate environments, allowing them to work with data sources in multiple formats without having to learn a new language or rewrite valuable core functionality.”

"The standardized Service Data Object (SDO) API allows developers to expose heterogeneous data sources, allowing it to be used as a service.

Application developers can use the SDO API, without having to know multiple data formats and the underlying connection mechanisms to ease application development, reduce the strain on resources memory resources and reduce the need to parse large XML files, alleviating the key challenges being faced by IT architects.

The Web-based survey includes responses from 570 participants visiting Tech Target’s TheServerSide.NET, an online community for enterprise .NET architects and developers, as well as participants in Rogue Wave Software’s development community.
