November 22, 2005

Today, the W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) has announced a new working group to supervise the smooth integration between Binary XML and other XML implementations in today's Web services and other areas of the industry.

As a result, the W3C has officially launched the Efficient XML Interchange (EXI) Working Group, responsible to ensure that W3C’s proposed Binary XML format integrates with other XML formats and data sets.

The group's objective is to follow up on work developed by W3C's XML Binary Characterization (XBC) Working Group, which has been looking into ways to alleviate the impending XML performance "crisis."

The XBC group concluded that Binary XML is needed, is feasible, and recommended that the W3C produce a standard Binary XML format.

The XBC group also established a set of use cases for which Binary XML may offer solutions to performance issues created by XML.

As part of its process, the EXI group will seek to validate that performance gains stemming from the XBC group's recommendations are significant, and the potential for disruption to existing processors is small.

The EXI group will start by considering existing solutions and will evaluate each in terms of implementability and performance against the requirements and use cases documents produced by the XBC Working Group.

The EXI group is chartered through December 2007, and the initial chairs the group will be Oliver Goldman of Adobe Systems, and Robin Berjon of Expway.

The charter of the Efficient XML Working Group can be found at www.w3.org/2005/09/exi-charter-final.html
