At the Microsoft TechEd event this week, Microsoft has released the Visual Studio 2005 Team System, Web Services Enhancements (WSE) 2.0 and the Office Information Bridge Framework 1.0 Beta.

New features in WSE include a policy framework, enhanced security model, message-oriented programming model, and support for multiple hosting environments.

"Microsoft Office Information Bridge Framework 1.0. Information Bridge Framework is an integrated set of tools that uses eXtensible Markup Language (XML) and Web services to enable information workers to view and act on enterprise business data from within familiar Microsoft Office System programs."

Team System will focus on managing application development projects and making it easier to blend the results into corporate IT systems. The package, intended for delivery with the main Visual Studio 2005 release in the first half of next year, will include modeling tools for representing back-end systems and managing how a new application fits into the environment.

Ballmer said the package will help developers, managers, testers and IT administrators work together more efficiently and that it's emblematic of Microsoft's new "do more with less" theme.

"For those of you on the IT side of the house, this is where we really come to the fore with Dynamic Systems Initiative," Microsoft's systems management program, he said. "Software can be looked at from an operations perspective as well as a development perspective."

The modeling tools, formerly known as Whitehorse, will enable IT folks to mix and match graphical representations of various processes used in their corporate network.

The upshot is that developers can ensure that a new application is fully compatible with their network infrastructure before releasing it into the wild, as opposed to the old trial-and-error style of testing, said Rick LaPlante, general manager of Visual Studio Enterprise Tools.

Expanding on its vision of Office as a front end to business applications, Microsoft Corp. on Monday announced the trial release of a software bundle that allows developers to link business systems to Office applications using Web services.

The bundle, called Office Information Bridge Framework, includes an Office add-in for interpreting XML (Extensible Markup Language) metadata, a server component that exposes data, views and actions of a Web service, and a metadata designer that plugs into the Visual Studio developer tool, Microsoft said at its Tech Ed user event in San Diego.

The Office Information Bridge Framework allows allow developers to add functionality to Office applications such as Outlook and Excel so users of those applications can access information from back-end business systems from within the Office applications, Microsoft said.
