A greater appetite for Web services integration, p.2

January 28, 2004

PolarLake

Ronan Bradley, CEO of PolarLake, asks if 2004 be the year of the Enterprise Service Bus and discusses the drivers behind the increasing demand and hype surrounding the ESB.

2003 has been an interesting year for integration software. Some of the familiar names have disappeared such as Mercator, which was acquired by Ascential after 18 years in business.

In parallel, the Enterprise Software Bus has become the hype term of 2003 and there has been an ever-increasing sequence of announcements from vendors big (IBM and Microsoft have both made moves towards creating their own ESBs), not so big (SeeBeyond being the latest I have seen to make an ESB announcement).

Before we jump to any conclusions about whether 2004 will or won't be the year of the ESB, it is useful to step back and consider what has driven this rapid convergence between analyst, vendors and customers on what is needed from integration software.

Two reasons stand out. The need for standards based integration and the need for incremental approaches (good-bye to the 'death or glory' integration projects). This shouldn't be surprising: A move to standards based integration is simply following the trend clearly set by J2EE for application development. Similarly, incremental integration allows businesses to invest to solve problems as they occur and hence justify the investment.
